Dr. Meggan McCarthy is an historian and preservation specialist with extensive experience in historic building analysis and conservation strategy. She has a passion for helping communities, organizations, and property owners tell their stories through the preservation, recognition, and restoration of historic sites.

Meggan holds degrees from Middle Tennessee State University and Florida State University. During graduate school, Meggan worked for the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University. Following graduation, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University’s Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities.

Meggan’swork reflects a commitment to thoughtful, research-driven preservation that is responsive to the history, character, and long-term stewardship of each place. She is passionate about helping clients craft practical preservation strategies to achieve their goals.

Meggan has extensive experience in historic preservation, including preparation of National Register nominations, historic resource surveys, historic structures reports, collections inventories, preservation and heritage planning, interpretive planning, cemetery preservation, and preservation grant development. Her work has encompassed individual properties, historic districts, cultural landscapes, institutional and religious resources, and community heritage sites across the Southeast.

Meggan’s dissertation, Multiple Stories: Urbanism, Interpretation, and the Historic House Museum, examines how communities understand and assign meaning to historic house sites. Her work focuses not only on the buildings, but also the individuals and organziations who commit to preserving their piece of our shared history. Meggan helps clients tell their stories as places are preserved, adapted, and redeveloped.

Meggan has served on the Board of Directors of Friends of Two Rivers and has been recognized by the Decorative Arts Trust, the Colonial Dames, the Colonial Dames XVII Century, and the Lower Altamaha Historical Society.
